Crown Court : The Flight of the Lapwing

Season 3, Episode 16: Flight of the Lapwing Original Air Date—6 February 1974 After surviving the crash of a light aircraft in which two passengers were killed, the pilot of the aircraft is suing a relative of one of the victims for libel. The relative claimed in a newspaper article that the pilot was medically unfit to fly the aircraft and may also have been attempting to commit suicide by deliberately crashing the plane. He denies the allegation.

• A television institution that lasted for over a decade, Crown Court was a 

  much-loved courtroom drama which, although the cases were fictional, 

  used 'real' jurors chosen from member of the public. 

  Multiple endings were prepared for each story, dependent on whether 

  the accused was found guilty or acquitted of the charges, giving each story 

  a strength and energy which raised it far above that of normal courtroom 

  dramas. 

  Trivia for "Crown Court" (1972 -1984) The jury was composed of ordinary 

  lay people (not actors) chosen at random from the electoral roll of 

  Manchester where the Granada TV studios were located. Only the jury 

  foreman was an actor - this was needed to comply with Equityrules on 

  speaking parts only being given to Equity members. 

  All the episodes of a given case were recorded on the same day and 
  the jury was given thirty minutes to reach its verdict, based on the 
  evidence that it had heard. 

  For many stories, two endings were scripted and rehearsed to match 

  whichever verdict (guilty or not guilty) the jury happened to return.
  The theme tune to the show was "Distant Hills". It was released as the 
  B side to Simon Park Orchestra's UK   Number 1 single "Eye Level".
